The Shove Test

The Kick Test

The Slide Test

Grab a friend and have them give you a gentle push from behind—just enough that you have to step forward to catch your balance.

The foot you instinctively step forward with is usually your front foot on a snowboard.

  • Step forward with your left foot → you’re likely regular

  • Step forward with your right foot → you’re likely goofy

This natural reaction makes the shove test one of the quickest ways to identify your stance.

Think about which foot you’d use to kick a soccer ball. That’s your dominant foot, and on a snowboard, it typically becomes your back foot.

  • Kick with your right foot → left foot forward (regular)

  • Kick with your left foot → right foot forward (goofy)

This test works well because it’s based on everyday movement patterns.

Find a smooth surface like hardwood or tile, put on some socks, and take a small running start. As you slide, notice which foot naturally goes forward.

That foot is usually your front foot on a snowboard.

  • Left foot forwardregular

  • Right foot forwardgoofy

It’s simple, fun, and surprisingly accurate.

Still Not Sure? Try Both

If you’re still unsure, don’t stress—it’s easy to experiment. Most snowboard shops (including us) can help you test different stances when setting up your board. Once you start riding, it becomes pretty clear which stance feels more natural.

There’s no wrong answer here. Focus on comfort and control, and everything else will come with time.
